Camel Safari

We visited Sam Dhani in mid June 2014.

It's a 40km ride from Jaisalmer to Sam. Takes about 45 mins via road. There is Rs. 20 toll to enter. You'll find camels available to take you into the desert if you haven't booked for your tour already. We had booked one camel only from an agent in the fort thinking it's capacity is two and we should be fine. When we got to the camels, we realized that the person riding in the back seat does not have anything to test their feet on.  They can make it available but they keep it that way to force us into hiring two camels instead of one. For our comfort we ended up hiring another camel on the stop for Rs. 600. These are not fixed prices but vary by the season, your looks and many other factors :).

The camel safari route goes into the desert for about 3 kms going up and down through many dunes. It is very picturesque. Given the low tourist season, we pretty much had the whole desert to ourselves. Weather was probably about 30℃ at this time and pleasant enough. We went some distance and waited for Sunset. There was a breeze and this created a bit of haze, sand was up in the air and the sunset was not perfect for our cameras but it was a beautiful moment for us to just sit and enjoy. It was very quite, all we could hear was the wind and jingle of the camels. Beautiful quite moments.

While in the midst of dunes in breeze, we started covering our face with whatever fabric we had so naturally. I know understand the Arabian attire which makes sense for such conditions. We had worn linen pants, t-shirts, flip flops, sun glasses and had carried a scarf. We used the scarf to cover our face. This much of clothing was fine for the safari. Just make sure you carry your flip flops in hand while walking on the steep side of dunes, there is a very good chance they can get swallowed up by the dunes if you lose foothold of them.

I wish this place can be kept free of trash. It is a beautiful place but you will come across plastic water bottles and beer bottles just thrown here and there. Sand does cover up most of trash, even then we could see quite a bit of trash in the dunes and this was in low tourist season. There are paddlers walking through the safari route trying to sell cold water and beer, this is lively hood to them but a big trash generator.

After sunset we got to the camp site that we had booked. There are many such camps on that road. Since there were May be just one or two parties at every other camp site, we were all just asked to go one camp site and the cultural program and food was organized there. It was amazing to see the star studded night sky. We had decided not to stay at the camp sites for the whole night. Not all camps were fully functional, there was very few people, so safety was a concern. While at the cultural program we noticed a Scorpion too. We headed back to our hotel around 10:30p.
